When you decide to take the plunge and start wearing a wig, whether on a daily basis or occasional and alternative looks, there are a lot of elements to consider. What type of wig will work best with your lifestyle? Do you want short or long hair? Do you want to be able to pull the hair back or wear the wig while working out? Then there’s the fun part – picking a style and then the perfect color. Wigs come in such a variety of colors, how do you select a wig in the right color for you?
Look at Your Other Features
To find a wig in a color that will look most natural, you want to consider your other features. First, your skin tone. Select a wig color that is just a shade or two lighter or darker than your skin tone, and thus your natural hair color. Going one shade lighter than your natural hair color and your skin tone can actually make you look a bit younger, too. More golden highlights also have this effect. But going too much lighter or darker will be signal that you’re wearing a wig.
If you are really thinking about lighter and becoming a blonde, try to think about or find pictures of your hair color as a child. Many kids start out as blonde and then their hair darkens up with age. If you were blonde as a child, blonde will most likely work well for you as an adult. And the shade of blonde you were born with is a good starting point.
Warm vs. Cool
Another way to figure out what color will look best and suit you is to figure out if you are have warmer color or cooler coloring. People with warmer coloring have darker or more golden skin and tan easily. Skin tone has a pink, peach or golden undertone. Eye color tends to be a hazel brown, green, blue and/or some golden flecks. For warm coloring, wig colors that look best include browns, auburns, red highlights and golden shades.
If you have cooler coloring, your skin may be fair with more dark drown and olive undertones – no pink. Eye colors tend to be dark brown, grayish blue, dark blue and hazel. For cool coloring, wigs in blacks, browns and blondes look great. Try to avoid golden highlights.
Because there are so many choices and aspects to consider in selecting a wig in the right color for you, it’s really best to try them on in person next to your skin tone, natural hair color and eyes.
