When you’re choosing your wig, there are a few options for hair type, mainly synthetic and real hair. Remy hair is human hair that is collected directly from a donor. Remy hair is also known as cuticle hair, virgin hair, or cut hair. When becoming a wig, Remy hair undergoes a special process that better preserves the cuticles of the hair in order for them to last longer. This process creates stronger, durable, fuller-bodied Remy hair pieces. Remy hair is the highest quality hair type from human donors used in wigs. However, beware of fake Remy hair. You may think you are paying for a high-quality hairpiece when, in reality, you’re paying for a piece that will fall apart after a couple wears.
Two Tests for Fake Hair
If you want to make sure that the hairpiece you bought is authentic Remy hair, there are two tests you can conduct to determine the authenticity:
- Burn Test. Cut a small piece of hair from your hairpiece and introduce it to a flame. If it burns, turns into little balls, and smells like a burning furnace, then it is real Remy hair. If it melts, balls up, smells like burning plastic, and produces black smoke, then you’ve been sold synthetic hair.
- Bleach Test. Human hair will get light really fast when introduced to bleach. Synthetic hair will burn when it comes in contact with bleach
Before Buying
Before you buy your Remy hairpiece, there are a few things you can do to make sure you are getting real human hair. You can conduct research from your most trusted sources and read reviews on certain hair brands. Also, pay attention to price. If you’re seeing that the human hair is incredibly cheap, beware of fake Remy hair! Real human hair will be on the pricier side, but that’s because it will last longer than fake hair. If you’re worried about fake hair being mixed with real hair, be sure to check the fibers closely. When the two types of hair are put together, upon close inspection you will be able to tell the difference.
