Protecting Your Wigs
Unfortunately, wigs don’t last forever. But the good news is properly washing and maintaining your wig can keep it looking natural and beautiful for longer. How to wash a wig depends on what it is made of.
There are two main types of wigs—human hair and synthetic fibers. Human hair wigs are washed and cared for differently than synthetic wigs. It’s important to understand the different processes to extend the lifespan of your wig.
Washing Your Human Hair Wig
You should wash your human hair wig once every 7-14 days, depending on if the hair feels sticky or if it looks dirty or dry. Keep in mind that while it’s important to wash your wig, the more you wash your wig the faster it will deteriorate. Below are seven steps to follow to properly wash your human hair wig.
1. Use a wide-tooth comb to gently remove any tangles from the wig.
2. Rinse the wig under cool, running water (but don’t submerge).
3. Gently squeeze hair to remove excess water (don’t wring or twist the hair).
4. Apply a small amount (quarter size) of human hair wig shampoo and gently smooth the shampoo over the hair from the base of the wig to the tips of the hair.
5. Rinse the shampoo using cool water and gently blot dry the hair with a towel.
6. While the wig is still slightly wet, gently apply a small amount of human hair wig conditioner and use your fingers to comb it through the hair. Let sit for three to five minutes before thoroughly rinsing with cool water.
7. Use a towel to blot dry the wig and hang loosely on a wig stand to air dry.
Washing Your Synthetic Wig
Synthetic wigs should only be washed after about wearing the wig fifteen to twenty times. A benefit of synthetic hair wigs is that they do not need to be washed frequently. Synthetic wigs do not last as long as human hair wigs so too much washing or roughly washing synthetic hair will decrease its lifespan even more. Here are seven steps to help you clean, maintain, and get the most out of your synthetic wig.
1. Gently remove any tangles using a wide-tooth comb.
2. Mix approximately one tablespoon of synthetic hair wig shampoo into a sink full of cool water. Submerge the wig and let it soak for three to five minutes.
3. While soaking, gently agitate the hair, but do not scrub it.
4. After washing, rinse the wig in cool water to remove shampoo. Gently squeeze out excess water and blot dry with a towel (do not wring or twist the hair).
5. Apply a small amount of hydrating conditioner for synthetic wigs, using your fingers to work the conditioner through the hair.
6. Rinse the wig again using cool water to remove all the conditioner from the hair. Gently squeeze to remove excess water.
7. Use a towel to gently blot dry the wig and hang it loosely on a wig stand to air dry.
