Restoring Last Year’s Costume Wig
Was last year’s costume such a hit that you are considering a revival this year? Or have you come up with another character in which you can use existing clothing and accessories, including your wig? If you spent the time, money and effort on an incredible costume, why not continue to show it off? But if you bought a costume wig and it’s been tucked away in a box since last Halloween, how can you restore it to its former glory?
Evaluate the Situation
Before you start the restoration process, evaluate the wig and see where it needs work. Are there knots? Are hair fibbers falling out? Maybe some static cling and a misshapen wig cap? Knowing what you are dealing with will help you bring the right tools to the situation. A wig comb and a spray bottle of water can go a long way.
Separate and Conquer
Synthetic hair fibers in costume or cosplay wigs tend to get knotted and ratty looking. Start by separating the hair and gently comb with a wig comb. Start at the bottom and work your way up towards the wig cap. Spritz a little water here and there to help you along, or even use a gentle hair detangler. Try to work out all the knots by pulling hair smooth and combing. Be patient and persistent. If you come across a knot that just won’t give, have a pair of scissors handy and cut through the center of the knot, trying to cut as few hairs as possible.
Wash and Wear
Once the tangles are out, wash the wig. If you still have the package or can find the wig online, check for any washing instructions first. If you can’t find any, try gently washing the wig with laundry detergent and lukewarm water. Pat dry the wig with a towel and use a fabric softener sheet to run along the strands. This will help keep frizzy strands at bay. Let the wig air dry on a wig stand and brush through again when dry. To style with waves or curls, you can use Velcro rollers and pin the curls to set.
Future Care
To make wig restoration as easy as possible in the future, store your costume wig on a wig stand covered in plastic. Just throw it on a shelf somewhere. This is the best way to keep the wig detangled and looking its best. Never store the wig when wet! If you wash the wig before storing, just make sure it is completely dry. If you don’t have a wig stand, you can store the wig in a plastic bag or the original packaging, just make sure it is folded nicely and not stored somewhere that it will be smooshed.
