It’s important for first-timers to understand the different types of wigs. Wigs can be classified in many ways, but most fall under two basic categories: synthetic hair, and real human hair.
There are lace front wigs and full lace front wigs. Full lace front wigs are popular for their natural look and comfort. Other highlights include their versatility (they can be worn in many styles, including braids, up-dos and low ponytails), light weight and ability to be parted naturally throughout the wig. However, they are generally more delicate than other types of bases and, depending on usage, may require repairs within the first year. For the most natural look, they may also require being glued around the perimeter entirely. For daily wearers, this can be quite time-consuming, but will not be a problem if the wig will be worn for extended periods of time.
In lace front wigs, the baby hairs are tied around lace edges to give the appearance of the hair growing directly from one’s scalp. These wigs generally have French laces in the front, while more durable material (such as monofilament, polyurethane or stretch lace) is used for the back and sides. They are popular because they are “breathable” and easy to apply, and provide the appearance of a natural hairline while being able to be pulled back into low ponytails.
Synthetic and real-hair wigs have considerable advantages and disadvantages over one another, so beginner should be familiar with both. Synthetic wigs are much more easily matched to a customer’s preferred color, cut and style, and are quite durable and easy maintain. They are also often preferred by women because they are not as expensive as real-hair wigs and dry much faster after being washed.
The primary disadvantage of synthetic wigs, however, is that they usually do not last long. Due to the wearing-down of fibers, they generally do not last longer than three to six months before requiring repair or replacement.
Real-hair wigs are popular because they can be styled just like real hair, such as with blow dryers, curling irons or flat irons, and vary greatly in quality from rough to silky-soft. “Grade A” wigs can even be permed or re-dyed!
